Torrens '23

Original Overells Building, 246 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley

Curating a design solution for the re-design and consolidation of Torrens University, Fortitude Valley in a live brief situation. With a goal to incorporate old and new while ensuring the structural integrity of the existing lot by offering sustainable, creative solutions to guarantee a light environmental footprint.

Using critical thinking methods and observing the needs of not only the client but the end users, a design solution to suit all needs wants and age levels offer space in a considered process. The space demonstrates in a way that excites, calms, and motivates with the use of bright, vibrant colours paired with natural colourways and sustainable materials. The zones transform the narrative of how you think a space should be. Using the original features of the building to create the link from what was to what will be.

Torrens University has a specific brand language which was integral in the overarching design. In honouring the first nations, the theme of this project was primarily based on Aboriginal culture with shapes and forms tailored to their culture and language. The overall layout of each zone considers the symbols found within the Aboriginal language, offering flowing, natural movement throughout.

The communal areas, library and end-of-trip were the focal zones chosen in this project with the principal objective to bring life back into zones which can and have been underutilised. Redesigning how you view a university library was a huge part of this project. Libraries have lost their spark because of the convenience that the internet and electronic devices offer. The client’s vision was to bring this zone back to life and offer a space where students will want to gather by designing a room that feels homely, warm, and inviting.

Project

Torrens University Consolidation in pre-existing, historically listed, Overells Store in Fortitude Valley.

Location

246 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley QLD

Historically listed, Original Walton’s / Overells department store.

Pre-design condition of interior/building/site

In the prime of its time, this venue was a thriving department store with its name up in lights. With clean sweeping lines and contrasting sharp angles, this site was the perfect example of 1900s style and class. Aiming to re-create a destination location, the same original ebbs and flows of the space have continued in this modern design. The abandoned site has seen years of birds and hooligans littering the space with mess and graffiti. Due to the age of the site and minimal upkeep, rust and weather damage can be seen throughout.

Client Requirements

The consolidation of Torrens University will see that this site becomes their new home offering an all-encompassing site for all students. The space is to offer reconnection and openness in a ‘post-COVID-19 world. The space offers the ability to exclude or include while respecting those who first walked the lands on which the site sits. The First Nations people, specifically Aboriginal culture, is to play a significant role in the designs and should consider thoroughly to avoid any disrespect.

  • Management of noise in an open setting

  • Upcycling, recycling, and sustainability throughout the design

  • Offering a design that accommodates all disciplines that will use the space.
